Why Choose Methodist for Your Career?
By Kay Kirby, PHR, HR Business Partner, Methodist Health System
It’s a new year. Are you ready for a fresh start? Maybe you’ve resolved that now is the time to take your career to a new level with the organization that best meets your personal and professional needs. If so, then why should you choose Methodist Health System for your career partner?
As a human resources professional, I’ve found that a simple exercise can often help you identify what to look for in a health system. Think of the hospital or health system as a person. Which adjectives would you use to describe the ideal setting to help you care for others while caring for yourself at the same time?
It’s amazing how often the same words appear:
- Committed to learning
- Focused on health and healing
While these adjectives could describe many health care organizations, they have a special meaning when describing Methodist Health System.
Methodist has a long tradition of caring for North Texans, 85 years in fact, and the spirit of innovation has burned brightly and has shaped our culture since day one. Today, Methodist’s legacy of innovation is highlighted with many firsts that have earned it recognition as one of the leading teaching and referral hospitals in Texas.
Methodist’s mission is simple and understandable: “To improve and save lives through compassionate, quality health care.” Our thousands of dedicated caregivers put this mission into action every day, clearly demonstrating the organization’s focus on caring, healing, and health. This focus extends beyond the patients to the staff with a comprehensive wellness program that links the importance of personal health and well-being to the ability to deliver top-quality care.
It’s important for prospective employees to know that Methodist has created programs and dedicated resources to help the organization reach its goal of being the healthiest health care system by 2016. In fact, employees who participate in our Live Well, Shine Bright wellness program and show improvements in their health will be eligible for medical insurance discounts if they’re on the Methodist health plan.
There’s no better example of Methodist’s commitment to learning than our preceptor programs that welcome students from many nursing and allied health programs to experience our culture of caring by completing rotations in our system hospitals. In addition, our graduate medical education programs attract physicians from medical schools across the country.
Finally, I’ve found that most candidates want to join a family of caregivers. One where they know that their fellow employees have their support and one where the organization cares about them by providing generous compensation and benefits. Unlike many health care organizations these days, Methodist values experience and tenure. For example, a 15-year employee who contributes $2.50 to her retirement fund receives a $6.25 match from Methodist.
When all is said and done, a health care organization is only as good as its people, and we are committed to excellence every day. We deliver on our promise to the community and to each other. And, our employees are passionate about what they do and feel fortunate to have found the best organization for them. Now that’s what I call an ideal choice for most candidates.
