Methodist Charlton and DeSoto Fire Rescue Set New 14-Minute Record for Fast Heart Attack Care
Methodist Charlton Medical Center and DeSoto Fire Rescue recently set a new record for fast heart attack care with a door-to-balloon (D2B) time of just 14 minutes. Their previous record was 24 minutes. Door-to-balloon time is the time between the patient’s arrival in the emergency department and the opening of the blocked artery following a heart attack. The cooperative efforts of Methodist Charlton’s emergency department and cardiac catheterization lab; cardiologist Manishkumar Patel, MD, an independently practicing cardiologist on the Methodist Charlton medical staff; and DeSoto Fire Rescue helped make the record-breaking time.
“I am extremely proud of our team of catheterization lab, physicians, and emergency department staff,” says Ingrid Kindipan, MSN, RN, CCRN, director of cardiology at Methodist Charlton. “Their commitment to excellence and quality patient care allows our patients to have the best outcomes. We continue to set new records for our door to balloon times because of the continued collaboration and teamwork among our staff and our partnership with local emergency medical services.”
The cardiology team at Methodist Charlton has been named a top performer for heart attack care by the Dallas County STEMI System of Care. During the third quarter of 2012, Methodist Charlton ranked No. 1 in door-to-balloon (D2B) average in the county, with an average D2B time of just 50 minutes, far ahead of the national goal of 90 minutes. Also, out of the top D2B performers, Methodist Charlton holds eight of the fastest times, and 4 of the top 10. Methodist Charlton has also received the American College of Cardiology Foundation’s NCDR ACTION Registry® – GWTG ™ Silver Performance Achievement Award for 2012 — one of only 73 hospitals nationwide to do so.
